Peru grabbed a 2-0 upset victory over Colombia in the Copa América quarter-finals on Saturday to advance for their first semi-finals since 1997. Peru qualified for three FIFA World Cups, and won the Copa América in 1975.

After scoreless first and second sessions, finally, Carlos Lobatón scored his first goal on in the 102 minute and to give his side a 1-0 lead and Vargas sealed the victory in the 112th minute.

The Colombians began the game positively, knocking the ball about confidently but could not muster any clear cut chance. Luis Advíncula had to face a yellow card in the first minute of game.

Peru’s Vargas fired an excellent attacking shot for his side from 30 yards which had Luis Enrique Martinez scrambling only for the shot to zip narrowly wide.

Colombians, which are runner-ups in the 1975 Copa America won by Peru, should have taken the lead with a penalty in the 66th minute but striker Radamel Falcao put the ball wide.

Peru will face either Uruguay in a semifinal clash which is to take place on July 19.

Peru line up: Libman, Acasiete, Revoredo, Ramos; Vilchez, Balbin, Guevara. Gonzalez, Corzo; Chrioque, Ruidiaz
